Wildfire Dialogue

Date & Time
June 26, 2024
5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Location
Clair Nelson Center, Finland MN

On June 26, 2024, from 5 to 7 p.m., Project Optimist and Friends of the Finland Community will host an in-person conversation about wildfire. It’s part of an event series called Shades of Purple: Dialogue across difference.
We are inviting individuals who live in Minnesota’s Finland, Isabella, and surrounding communities to join us for a moderated dialogue about the increasing risk of wildfire in Northern Minnesota. Our hope is to bring people together across barriers to discuss their lived experiences as it relates to wildfire in the Finland and Isabella area. As a participant, you’ll be invited to share from your own personal experiences and core values about wildfire, management, and emergency response.
To participate, please complete our registration form on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/…/project-optimists-wildfire…
The dialogues will take place in small breakout groups of approximately four to six participants, one moderator, and a reporter. Dialogues will last about 75 minutes, with time before and after to learn more about Project Optimist and Friends of the Finland Community.
Unlike many discussions, this dialogue will be structured to promote careful listening and discourage rebuttal and criticism. We aim to promote understanding. We will use communication agreements during the dialogue to support these efforts.
Snacks will be provided to all participants during the event.
Project Optimist, a digital news startup, is coordinating community conversations across Minnesota. A team of staff and volunteers are working to engage residents of greater Minnesota to help them collaborate across common divides, tackle tough problems, and grow more optimistic. Project Optimist does this by tapping Minnesota’s creative talent to produce solution-focused news stories and local art and by bringing residents together in dialogue.
Friends of the Finland Community’s mission is to help make Finland and its surrounding area an inviting and vibrant place by creating community spaces and connections, supporting economic initiatives, implementing social programs, enhancing natural surroundings, and demonstrating sustainable practices. Friends of the Finland Community is a non-profit entity in the Northern Lake County area providing space for youth, senior citizens, community groups, events, rentals, small business support and incubation, community education classes, social programs, community recreation, free wi-fi internet, public computers, trail maps and information, all in one location.
