Gooseberry Falls State Park – Agate Beach
Within Gooseberry Falls State Park, you’ll find a rocky Lake Superior shoreline and a pebble beach, known as Agate Beach. Hike along the Gooseberry River down to the mouth as it flows into Lake Superior. Continue along the trail to the right to reach the Picnic Flow. More than one billion years ago, the earth’s crust split apart, creating the Mid-Continental Rift. Lava exuded onto the surface and as it cooled, volcanic rocks formed, like the basalt in this exposed flow. Be sure to explore the ancient rock!
