Top Trails: Where the Wild Rides Begin

Moose Run ATV Trail

Located near Two Harbors and Silver Bay, the Moose Run Trail is a rugged, 20+ mile backcountry route that winds through pristine forestland and lowland marshes — ideal moose territory. This trail is well-suited for intermediate riders, offering a mix of variable terrain that includes rock-strewn ridges and softer, mossy sections. It connects with other area trails, offering the chance for extended rides through deep wilderness.

Keep your eyes peeled: this is one of the best places in the state to spot a moose in the wild.

Red Dot Trail

The Red Dot Trail is a long-established favorite among ATV riders in Lake County. Stretching from the outskirts of Silver Bay and running inland toward Finland and Isabella areas, this multi-use trail has been upgraded over time to support year-round access.

Expect long scenic stretches through pine and birch forests, boardwalks through wetlands, and rocky ridges with expansive views. It’s a connector’s dream, linking you to the Moose Walk, Moose Run, and Wild Country Trails for a truly extensive ride.

Wild Country Trail

As its name suggests, the Wild Country Trail takes you deep into untamed northern Minnesota. Starting near Finland and stretching west toward Isabella, this trail plunges into old-growth forest, glacial lakes, and lowland bogs. It’s peaceful, quiet, and a perfect off-grid getaway for those who enjoy remote rides.

The terrain is more remote and less trafficked than the others, making it a solid pick for seasoned riders seeking solitude.

Scenic Stops: Views Worth Braking For

Even adrenaline-fueled riders will want to slow down for these jaw-dropping overlooks:

  • Palisade Head Overlook (near Silver Bay): Though not directly on the trail, it’s worth a quick detour to view 300-foot cliffs plunging into Lake Superior.
  • Heartbreak Ridge on the Red Dot Trail: An elevation climb near Finland gives you a peek at Lake Superior in the far distance, framed by an expanse of forest.
  • Section 16 Overlook: Located on a connector spur off the Wild Country Trail, this hidden gem offers sweeping views of wetlands and rocky outcrops.
  • George’s Gorge: a breathtaking view of a deep, forested ravine along the Red Dot Trail
